Achilles

For a while now I’ve had some issues with my Achilles tendon. It started a few years ago, at a time when I was upping my running in preparation for a half-marathon. Since then, it’s been somewhat “on and off”.

I went to the physio, and was given the classic “heel drop” exercises. I did this religiously (and still do, in general, in an attempt to keep it under control) and after a few months things seemed to get back to where they should have been. Then, for no obvious reason, it got worse again. More exercises and rest, and then better … and worse … and.

I would really love to know why this keeps happening. It’s all well and good having a protocol to bring it under control, but it would be way better to know what is causing it and how to avoid the problem in the first place. For instance, I assume it must be something about the way I run, or my body configuration, or some other physical aspect.

All I know is that, once it feels like it is getting better, I have a tendency to push things a bit too hard and a bit too soon, and find myself back in that old place. Honestly I’m getting a bit fed up about it at this stage.

You might by now have noticed that this is a rather meandering post. I suppose what I’m looking for is some external perspective by someone with knowledge of the area, to navigate me into pastures new. Preferably at a solid running pace, and without heel pain…
